Happy To Be Annoyed | Columbus, Ohio Family Photographer

When my son broke his arm, we came home and laid him on the bed. He had a good dose of morphine because of the severity of the breaks so he was a little out of it. When he said there was a bird, I thought he was probably just seeing things. I looked up at the vaulted ceilings and there was a freaking bat circling! I scooped him up, grabbed my daughter and ran to another bedroom and told my husband to take care of it. I’m brave like that. My husband wasn’t exactly an expert bat catcher especially with vaulted ceilings so he called our neighbor, Tom, for help. It took a bit but, when Tom left, the bat was no longer a worry.

I think Tom would agree that we aren’t exactly two peas in a pod. In fact, I probably disagree with about 95% of the things that he says. Here’s the thing about Tom. He is the most loyal friend that you could have in your life. I have the utmost respect for him because of that fact. Truth be told, it’s probably the only reason why I tolerate him. He is the guy you call when the most random shit needs to get done. He is the guy that would literally drop everything to help. It’s not lip service. He will actually drop everything.

When we got the news that Tom had thyroid cancer, we got a gut check. Tom fought it. He was literally radioactive for a bit. Now he has no evidence of disease. He has to take blood tests every few months, has no metabolism and low alcohol tolerance but, he’s back to being weird Tom. His wife, Jill, wanted a photoshoot because, well, he made it so that’s what we did despite that God awful hair. We joked about the missing thyroid, the hair, life insurance and that for once in my life, I was happy to be annoyed by Tom. The underlying feeling was thankfulness.

I hope when they are sitting in their family room and Jill is rolling her eyes at Tom because Tom is being Tom, they remember that feeling. Seeing our moments of strength, thankfulness, laughter and even annoyance is worth it.
